Orientation for the Summer Reading Greyhound Program

Time: 11:00 am-12:00 pm
Place: Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue, 14 W. Swanzey Rd., Swanzey, NH
Price: Free
Ages: All

Greyhounds Make Children Better Readers

At any given time, Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue in Swanzey, New Hampshire, has 50 or more greyhounds waiting for their new forever homes.  Due to their previous living conditions and treatment during their racing careers, many of the greyhounds come to us timid and nervous around new people.  In an effort to make the greyhounds less anxious and more receptive to new people, we are hosting a Summer Reading Program where children will come read out loud to the greyhounds.  Studies have shown that when children read out loud, they tend to read in a monotone, quiet voice which is very soothing and comforting to the greyhounds.

The orientation for students is Sunday, June 10 from 11am – 12pm at Fast Friends.  We will introduce them to greyhounds as a breed, teach them about their life as a racing greyhound and explain why they are now at Fast Friends. We will also explain how reading out loud to the greyhounds helps them find homes faster. Once the children have gone through the orientation with their parents, they can choose a block of time to come and read to one of our greyhounds each week throughout the summer.  If they come at least 5 times during the summer, they will receive a gift certificate for a free ice cream cone from Twinkle Town. There will also be prizes for the students that come most often and complete the most hours of reading.

The reading program enables children to improve their out loud reading skills without being judged by their peers and allows the greyhounds to become more relaxed around strangers. This in turn helps the dogs get adopted sooner. It is truly a win-win program for the kids, parents and the dogs.

This is the second year for the Summer Reading Program and we hope you will join us in making it another greyt success!  Please feel free to call us at (603) 355-1556 to sign up for the orientation or if you have any questions. You may also reach us by email at info@fastfriendsgreyhounds.org.  We hope to see you on June 10th!

Julia Older Signing her "Tales of The Francois Vase"

Time: 2:00 pm
Place: Colony Mill, Toadstool Bookshop, Keene, NH
Price: Free
Ages: All

Julia Older's obsession with the famous Francois Vase led to both the radio play and her book-length poem, Tales of the Francois Vase. The dramatic 25-century journey of the vase winds through a subterranean inferno of greed, passion, and terror. Twice it was smashed into 600-plus pieces, came unglued, and was puzzled together, each time with a piece missing. A third time - during the 1966 Florence Flood - a scientist intentionally broke the vase. He restored it with the missing piece, and at last it was whole. Older's book offers readers the entire fascinating story. The poem is illustrated with the vase figures from the Iliad and includes a "backstory" with Older's original translations of her research.
Stop by on Saturday, June 9 at 2:00 p.m. to meet Julia Older and get Tales of the Francois Vase autographed.

Fun with Math for Parents and Children

Time: 10:00 am-10:45 am
Place: Keene Public Library, Youth Program Room, Keene, NH
Price: Free
Ages: Birth-5

This Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® workshop is for parents, grandparents, childcare providers --and their children from birth to age five.  The workshop presents five important early literacy practices along with interactive math activities that parents and caregivers can use to help children learn more about the world, acquire new vocabulary, and develop other early literacy skills.
Before children can learn to read, they must develop a range of early literacy skills. Learning these skills, which begins at birth, has a long-term impact on children's reading achievement and academic success. Children who enter school with well-developed early literacy skills have an advantage; they are ready to learn to read.
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA) worked with Dr. Susan B. Neuman and Dr. Donna Celano nationally-known researchers and educators to develop the Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® @ your library® workshops and materials.

Windham Orchestra: Russian Festival

Time: 7:30 pm-8:30 pm
Place: Landmark College, 1 River Rd., Putney, VT (about 25 miles from Keene)
Price: n/a
Ages: All

This concert is built around three Russian composers and a brilliant young artist from our region.
Hugh Keelan, Director; featuring Mathew Woodard, violin.
Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto in D (1931)
Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite
Tchaikovsky’s Overture-Fantasy Romeo and Juliet
Matthew Woodard will play (on a Douglas Cox instrument!) Stravinsky’s Violin Concerto, a touching and invigorating masterpiece that references the circus’ crisp, frolicking rhythms, and Bach, through glowing melody and extravagant ornamentation.
Matthew will also conduct Glinka’s lively overture to Ruslan and Lyudmilla.
Tchaikovsky’s glorious symphonic poem Romeo and Juliet, all youthful ardor and passion, and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite complete this sumptuous program. The Firebird perfectly complements the Violin Concerto: aching, magical tenderness, infernal dances and breathtaking climaxes in Stravinsky’s early work, wry subtle humor and warmest affection in his later.
