Greyhounds Make Children Better Readers

At any given time, Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue in Swanzey, New Hampshire, has 50 or more greyhounds waiting for their new forever homes.  Due to their previous living conditions and treatment during their racing careers, many of the greyhounds come to us timid and nervous around new people.  In an effort to make the greyhounds less anxious and more receptive to new people, we are hosting a Summer Reading Program where children will come read out loud to the greyhounds.  Studies have shown that when children read out loud, they tend to read in a monotone, quiet voice which is very soothing and comforting to the greyhounds.

The orientation for students is Sunday, June 10 from 11am – 12pm at Fast Friends.  We will introduce them to greyhounds as a breed, teach them about their life as a racing greyhound and explain why they are now at Fast Friends. We will also explain how reading out loud to the greyhounds helps them find homes faster. Once the children have gone through the orientation with their parents, they can choose a block of time to come and read to one of our greyhounds each week throughout the summer.  If they come at least 5 times during the summer, they will receive a gift certificate for a free ice cream cone from Twinkle Town. There will also be prizes for the students that come most often and complete the most hours of reading.

The reading program enables children to improve their out loud reading skills without being judged by their peers and allows the greyhounds to become more relaxed around strangers. This in turn helps the dogs get adopted sooner. It is truly a win-win program for the kids, parents and the dogs.

This is the second year for the Summer Reading Program and we hope you will join us in making it another greyt success!  Please feel free to call us at (603) 355-1556 to sign up for the orientation or if you have any questions. You may also reach us by email at info@fastfriendsgreyhounds.org.  We hope to see you on June 10th!
