This Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® workshop is for parents, grandparents, childcare providers --and their children from birth to age five. The workshop presents five important early literacy practices along with interactive science activities that parents and caregivers can use to help children learn more about the world, acquire new vocabulary, and develop other early literacy skills.
Before children can learn to read, they must develop a range of early literacy skills. Learning these skills, which begins at birth, has a long-term impact on children's reading achievement and academic success. Children who enter school with well-developed early literacy skills have an advantage; they are ready to learn to read.
The Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC) and the Public Library Association (PLA) worked with Dr. Susan B. Neuman and Dr. Donna Celano nationally-known researchers and educators to develop the Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® @ your library® workshops and materials.

Relay For Life is an event that helps communities celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. Teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event.

Your reasons for walking in the Relay For Life are as unique and special as the story that motivates you. This is your opportunity to not only honor cancer survivors and remember people we have lost, but also to raise funds and awareness to help save lives. Because of your support, we are creating a world where cancer can’t claim another year of anyone’s life. You are helping create a world with less cancer and more birthdays!

Relay For Life of the Greater Keene Area is an overnight community event of the American Cancer Society. Participants camp out, walk or run a track around the track at Monadnock Regional High School to raise money for cancer research, patient support, education and advocacy.

Survivor Lap: directly following Opening Ceremony
Fight Back: TBD
Luminaria Ceremony: 9pm

The Mabel Story

Price: Tickets are $13 in advance/$15 at the door

A multimedia theatrical reinterpretation of the Russian folk tale “Vasilisa the Brave” featuring live musical storytelling and acrobatic dance theater. The show has been called a “visual feast”, weaving fantastical video art and shadow play with sets and costumes that harken back to Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal. Maria Pugnetti, playing both narrator and hero, tells Mabel’s story through an all original musical score that combines freak folk with a touch of Bjork and the classic bedtime story. The dynamic dance trio Radha Newsom, Jahnavi Newsom, and Cyndal Ellis animate the stage with a contemporary fusion of modern dance, capoeira, acrobatics, and tribal style belly dance. The Mabel Story transports audiences of all ages on an other-worldly adventure.

Set in the 1800s of the American West, The Mabel Story tells the tale of a girl who loses her mother to typhus and is left in the care of a sinister widow and her two daughters. When Mabel comes of age, she embarks on a dangerous rite of passage journey through a surreal wilderness in search of the witch Baba Sova. Mabel enters a magical realm of plants and animals where she gains courage and gratitude for the natural world.

Nighthawk Night Walk and Volunteer Training

Time: 7:00 pm-8:30 pm
Place: Keene State College, Science Center, Room 101, Keene, NH
Price: Free
Ages: Older

The dusk and dawn “peent” call of the Common Nighthawk (Chordeiles minor) was once a familiar sound in cities and towns throughout New Hampshire, where they nested on flat, peastone gravel roofs, and fed on insects attracted to city lights. In recent years nesting nighthawks have disappeared from many New Hampshire towns. In the few places where they remain (including Keene!), their numbers have dramatically declined. In partnership with New Hampshire Audubon, the Harris Center’s Citizen Science Program is once again coordinating volunteer nighthawk surveys on summer evenings in Keene. Come to the training to become a Project Nighthawk Volunteer, or simply to learn more about this charismatic endangered bird. We’ll begin indoors at the Keene State College Science Center (Room 101) at 7 p.m., then venture outside to look and listen for nighthawks in the twilight sky. Cosponsored with New Hampshire Audubon, and the Keene State College School of Sciences. Done about 8:30 p.m.

Zentangle Workshop

Time: 7:00 pm-9:00 pm
Place: Peterborough Town Library, Peterborough, NH (about 19 miles from Keene)
Price: Free
Ages: n/a

On Wednesday, May 30, Susanne Binnie, artist and teacher from Hollis, NH, will lead a Zentangle workshop at the Peterborough Town Library, beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the library’s meeting hall.

A Zentangle is essentially a structured doodle. It is, however, doodling with the intention of producing a finished piece of art. It is not necessary to be an artist to draw a Zentangle pattern, as there is no ‘correct’ way to complete a piece. Part of the excitement is that as a piece is being developed it may take on a life of its own, and the final product may be quite unlike the original idea!

The process of producing a Zentangle is fun and relaxing; indeed, many people find it relieves stress. Zentangle may be defined as a series of pen and ink strokes made on a piece of paper measuring about four inches square, often with unexpected results.

Ms. Binnie’s workshop is free, thanks to the generosity of the Friends of the Peterborough Town Library, but it is limited to ten participants, and advance signup is required. To sign up, please visit or telephone the library. 603-924-8040

"Mothers, Fathers, and Going it Alone - Two Voices" - Dramatic Reading

Time: 7:00 pm
Place: Mariposa Museum, Peterborough, NH (about 19 miles from Keene)
Price: Adult $15; Child/student: $5
Ages: All

Professional actors Warren Hammack and Pamela White will present a dramatic reading entitled "Mothers, Fathers, and Going it Alone- Two Voices." Last year, when David Blair heard Pamela and Warren do a dramatic reading of a Robert Penn Warren short story and the epic poem, The Ballad of Billie Potts, the idea occurred to him to ask them to do something for the current exhibit at Mariposa, Becoming  The Child's Journey to Adulthood. The three of them talked together, remembering the joy each felt as children: memorizing and reciting poems, playing characters from literature, and speaking stories for other people. They agreed those experiences were an important part of a child's journey to adulthood. And Pamela thought of her own becoming, what was it about?

Each of the stories you will hear at the Mariposa, from childhood favorites, Huck Finn and Peter Pan, as well as their own stories, have a lot in common. They tell of journeys that grow us, that extend who we are. They are stories of resilience, creativity, independence, and adventure.

Food For Thought

Time: 8:00 am-8:00 pm
Place: Grafton, VT (about 32 miles from Keene)
Price: $30 for the day
Ages: Older

A day-long celebration of the interrelationship between food and nature.
“The garden suggests there might be a place where we can meet nature halfway,” wrote Michael Pollan in The New York Times Magazine. On Saturday, May 26, The Nature Museum at Grafton will present Food For Thought; participants will explore sustainable food systems and the cultural food revolution. This event is part of the Museum’s Pale Blue Dot program series.

In offering Food for Thought, The Nature Museum seeks to set the proverbial table with tasty offerings that inspire people to stewardship of our earth’s natural resources. Authors, musicians, farmers, business owners, and naturalists will bring their dishes to share with an audience hungry for a taste of inspiration just as the summer growing season begins in Vermont. The buffet of workshops will include cheesemaking, butchering, vermicomposting, and saving songbirds with your coffee cup.

Presenters will include author and VPR commentator Ron Krupp and acclaimed kitchen garden designer Ellen Ecker Ogden. Severine von Tscharner Fleming will screen her documentary film, “The Greenhorns,” about a nonprofit organization of the same name that works to support young farmers.

Founded in 2010, the Pale Blue Dot is a series of events designed to rouse people to discover pioneering approaches to earth’s ecological challenges. The Pale Blue Dot seeks to spark change, however small, and ignite movement towards a new paradigm of living on earth.

Food for Thought events will take place at several venues around Grafton, Vermont. Check-in will begin at 8:00 a.m. at the White Church at 55 Main Street in Grafton. Keynotes and workshops will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with an afterparty at Phelps Barn from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Farmers’ market and restaurant vendors will sell lunch and other local wares at The Nature Museum from noon to 1:30.

Tickets are $30 for the day. Limited child care tickets are available for $20 per child. Pre-registration is strongly encouraged. Please call the Museum at (802) 843-2111 or email info@nature-museum.org with any questions. To stay up-to-date on all Pale Blue Dot events, “like” the Pale Blue Dot page on Facebook.

This Every Child Ready to Read® @ your library® workshop is for parents, grandparents, childcare providers --and their children from birth to age five. The workshop presents five important early literacy practices along with interactive activities that parents and caregivers can use to help children learn new words and their meaning.
