I am putting out feelers for a Stilt making workshop. It will be 4 hours long, in Manchester at Studio550, on a Monday or a Wednesday (11-3). If we can get enough families to sign up, it will be $10 per pair of stilts which includes materials, rental space, power tools, etc. I'd like to keep it at $10 but could go up to $15 to ensure the workshop takes place even if we only get a moderate number of people who commit.

On Friday, March 9th at 7pm the Mariposa Museum welcomes back Elizabeth Liz Marshall Thomas who will give a presentation entitled Every Parent's Dream The Bushmen Child. At age 19 Liz Thomas, with her family, lived amongst the Kalahari San, or Bushmen, the last significant population of true hunter-gatherers. Until their displacement in the 1970's their remarkable way of life had remained the same dating back fifteen thousand centuries living much as our earliest human ancestors. Liz's seminal work The Harmless People and her subsequent book The Old Way the Story of the First People tell the story of the natural and social world of the Bushmen.
The focus of Liz's talk at the Mariposa will be on child rearing in this culture. In The Old Way Liz describes, The Ju/wasi were unfailingly good to their children. An infant would be nursed on demand and stay close to its mother, safe in the pouch of her care, warm in cold weather, shaded in hot weather, complete with a wad of soft grass for a diaper. Ju/wa children very rarely cried, probably because they had little to cry about. No child was ever yelled at or slapped or physically punished and few were ever scolded. She goes on to describe the family and community involvement in the child's rearing and well being stating that the result is not a spoiled child but one who is free from frustration or anxiety, sunny and cooperative and usually without close siblings as competitors, the Ju/wa children were every parent's dream. No culture can ever have raised better, more intelligent, more likable, more confident children. Admission to this event is Adult $7, Member $5. Mariposa is wheelchair accessible

First session of Environmental Studies Institute course.
In this course we’ll discuss owl biology using both visual and audio aids. Topics will include anatomy, eyes and ears of owls, geography, foods, hunting techniques, nesting (eggs and young), and ‘owls and humans’. There will be discussions of owls found in the Monadnock Region. Field trips include local owl prowls, and a journey to areas in Massachusetts, where a Snowy Owl invasion has already begun.
Tom Warren is a graduate of Harvard College, and holds an MBA from the Wharton School of Finance. He has been involved with birds for 66 years. As a 4 year old, he lived across from the President of the Massachusetts Audubon Society, who introduced him to birds. Later, in Wellesley Middle School, he was one of the “Wellesley Boys and one Girl” studying under biology teacher, Douglas Sands, whose students include some of North America’s distinguished ornithologists such as Wayne Petersen and Dick Forster. Tom has guided walks and owl prowls for the Massachusetts Audubon Society for many years. He is a trustee of the Harris Center, New Hampshire Audubon, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society.

Abenaki Culture & History Group

HSCC will offer an Educators Book Group on Abenaki culture and history. The four session book group will give educators an opportunity to enhance their knowledge through a variety of readings and facilitated by Bob Goodby, Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Franklin Pierce University. Topics to be discussed through the readings will include the archaeology in the Monadnock Region, interpreting local Native American history, Abenaki history in northern New England, how Abenaki people maintained aspects of their culture and identity during the 19th and 20th century, and appropriate children's books to use in the classroom. Each session will be from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Participants will receive eight professional development credits, handouts, and a tour of the HSCC library and archive to learn what local resources are available to the region's educators. Once a silent monk, Echoes coordinator Paul Baker Hernandez was thrown out of his Trappist monastery for secretly making a guitar from a toilet seat and other recycled oddments. 40 years on, the reincarnated toilet has led him to invade queen's castles over nuclear weapons (heading up a posse of bishops), sing protest songs to popes, join Jackson Browne and Martin Sheen on Central American picket lines, and help fight off death squads attacking Salvadoran exiles in Los Angeles.
He now lives in Nicaragua where he has founded Echoes of Silence (artists with broken nails) to work in fair trade, community and eco-projects - and to make up irreverent songs about cellphones, dictators, and even Starbucks. With his unusual blend of humor, practical experience and beautifully powerful music, Paul is currently touring the USA.
