Mariposa Museum First Friday!

First Friday, April 6th at 7pm the Mariposa Museum will welcome the Hellenic Dance Troupe from St. Philip Greek Orthodox Church in Nashua. Under the instruction of Maria Donati and Marisa Donati the troupe will perform traditional dances; the lively Koftos, typical of the areas of Thessaly, Epirus and Central Greece; the slow movements of the Karagouna and the Tsamiko from the rural areas of central Greece and Peloponnese; the Tik distinctive in its music and dance from Pontos; and the ever popular Kalamatiano. loved by all Greek-Americans.

Dances will be performed by Eleni Philipon, Alexia Philipon, Athena LaJeunesse and Christina Katsioulis, in costumes that originate from the Epirus region, west Macedonia and mountaineer Greece. The costumes emphasize modesty and elegant beauty in the stitchery and woven fabric. According to Maria Donati the goal of the dance troupe is to keep the Greek culture alive by sharing the tradition of Greek dance as it is passed from generation to generation. By popular demand the photos of children by Stan Fry will remain in the Mariposa's gallery through April.

Kidcraft will be from 5-6 pm and there will be a brief reception from 6-7 pm. All events for First Friday are free and open to the public

Journey to the Lunar Highlands

Forty years ago this month, Apollo 16 astronauts John Young and Charlie Duke spent three days exploring the lunar surface, while their comrade Ken Mattingly conducted experiments in lunar orbit. Following a lunar-focused Tonight’s Sky planetarium show, join UNH’s Physics Dept. Chair Dr. Mark McConnell as he helps us relive the excitement of their lunar adventure. Along the way, learn what the Apollo 16 mission taught us about the Moon itself. Enjoy views of the full moon through our observatory telescope and with the NH Astronomical Society following the presentation.

The Discovery Center observatory will be open from 7 to 10 p.m. Following the program will be a free Skywatch outside with the New Hampshire Astronomical Society including personal telescope advice and assistance.
