Rain Gardens: Grown Your Own!

Time: 7:00 pm
Place: Rockingham Free Library, 65 Westminister St., Bellow Falls, VT (abot 22 miles from Keene)
Price: Free
Ages: Older

Rain Gardens are a landscaping  idea that’s gathering lots of interest and  being implemented all over the country. The concept is simple, yet highly effective: a Rain Garden  is a basin shaped garden designed to catch  and  retain  rain water run -off   from  impervious areas such as roofs, roads, driveways,  parking lots, even compacted  lawns. Using a variety of wetland  edge  plantings like wildflowers, ferns, rushes, shrubs etc., these “holding areas” allow the water to be absorbed  into the garden and then  travel through the Earth's natural filtration system before it re-enters our streams and rivers.

This natural process provides moisture redistribution, returns water vapor to the atmosphere, and helps to prevent erosion, pollution and flooding. It is estimated that rain gardens can cut down on the amount of pollution  reaching rivers and streams by up to 30%.
Presenter is Marie Caduto.

Major design principles used in rain gardens will be discussed, so participants will be able to begin designing their own gardens.

“Set during World War II, this tenderly written story tells of the war’s impact on two children, one an American and one
a Hungarian refugee. Giff’s well-drawn, believable characters and vivid prose style make this an excellent choice.”—
School Library Journal

Lily has planned a spectacular summer at Rockaway Beach at her
family’s cozy house on the Atlantic Ocean. But by the summer of 1944, World War II has changed almost everyone’s
lives.

Based on Patricia Reilly Giff’s moving novel, ArtsPower’s play
explores what happens when people are brave enough to forge new
relationships and follow their heart. Learn More
